Proposal: “Proposal for State-wide Awareness and Training Programme on Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, CPR & Disaster Management for School Students” ________________________________________ Funding Source Individual Donation/CSR/DMFT/Etc… Implementing Agency M/s SHREEVATSA EDU-CARE FOUNDATION ________________________________________ 1. Introduction The proposed State-wide Awareness and Training Programme on Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, CPR & Disaster Management for School Students is a comprehensive school-based initiative designed to strengthen life-saving skills, emergency preparedness and safety awareness among students across Karnataka. The project recognizes that emergencies such as accidents, injuries, sudden illness, fire and other disasters may occur at any time in schools, homes and communities. Providing students with appropriate awareness and practical exposure to basic emergency-response skills can help them respond safely and responsibly while seeking professional assistance. The programme will be implemented by Shreevatsa Edu-Care Foundation as the Implementing Agency for Karnataka, with technical and life-saving skills support from Rashtriya Life Saving Society India (RLSSI), subject to approval and guidance of the competent Government authorities. The project will focus on five key areas: 1. Basic Life Support (BLS) – Awareness of emergency recognition and initial response. 2. CPR – Awareness, demonstration and supervised practical training. 3. First Aid – Basic response to common injuries and emergency situations. 4. Disaster Management – Preparedness, evacuation, emergency communication and personal safety. 5. Safety & Accident Prevention – Developing a safety-conscious culture among students. The programme will adopt a practical, student-friendly and scalable training model, combining awareness sessions, demonstrations, supervised practice, interactive activities and basic assessments. The project aims not only to provide students with knowledge but also to encourage them to become responsible safety ambassadors within their schools, families and communities. Project Vision “Every Home –A LifeSaver” “Every School – A Safer School” “Every Student – A Life-Saving Ambassador” Implementing Agency Shreevatsa Edu-Care Foundation Technical Support Rashtriya Life Saving Society India (RLSSI) Life Saving Karnataka Core Message “WE SAVE LIVES” ________________________________________ 2. Executive Summary Shreevatsa Edu-Care Foundation proposes to implement a State-wide Awareness and Training Programme on Basic Life Support (BLS), First Aid, CPR & Disaster Management for School Students across Karnataka. The programme is designed to provide school students with age-appropriate awareness and practical exposure to essential emergency-response skills. The proposed intervention recognizes schools as an important platform for developing a culture of safety, preparedness and responsible emergency response. The programme will focus on four interconnected areas: 1. Basic Life Support (BLS) 2. First Aid and CPR 3. Emergency and Accident Preparedness 4. Disaster Management and Safety Awareness Through structured awareness sessions, demonstrations, supervised practical activities, training materials and assessments, students will learn how to recognize emergencies, respond safely, seek professional assistance and provide appropriate initial support until qualified emergency services arrive. The programme is intended to be scalable from school level to district and state level, with implementation planned in coordination with the Department of School Education and Literacy and concerned educational authorities. The proposed programme will also establish a measurable monitoring framework covering school participation, student participation, training completion, awareness improvement, practical exposure, feedback and programme documentation. ________________________________________ 3. Background and Rationale Children and young people spend a substantial portion of their time in schools and educational institutions. Schools therefore provide an effective platform for developing awareness regarding personal safety, emergency response, first aid and disaster preparedness. Emergencies such as injuries, sudden illness, accidents, drowning, burns, falls and other critical situations may occur in schools, homes, roads and communities. In such situations, appropriate action during the initial period can be important while professional medical assistance is being arranged. However, awareness of basic emergency response and life-saving skills is not uniformly available among school students. There is therefore a need to introduce structured, age-appropriate BLS, CPR, First Aid and Disaster Management awareness and training within the school environment. The proposed programme seeks to address this requirement through practical, participatory and scalable training. ________________________________________ 4. Vision “Every Home – A Life Saver; Every School – A Safer School; Every Student – A Life-Saving Ambassador; Every Community – A Prepared and Resilient Community.” The long-term vision is to develop a safety-conscious, skilled and resilient generation of students equipped with basic knowledge and practical skills in Emergency Response, First Aid, CPR, Drowning Prevention, Disaster Preparedness, Fire Safety and Personal Safety. The programme aims to empower students to respond appropriately during emergencies, protect themselves and others, and promote a culture of safety within their schools, homes and communities. The initiative further seeks to create a network of student safety ambassadors, trained teachers and community volunteers who can spread life-saving knowledge, encourage preventive practices and support emergency preparedness at the grassroots level. Through continuous awareness, practical training and community participation, the programme strives to contribute towards reducing preventable deaths and injuries and building safer, healthier and more resilient communities. ________________________________________ 5. Mission To provide accessible, standardized and age-appropriate awareness and practical training in BLS, First Aid, CPR, emergency response and disaster preparedness to school students across Karnataka. 6.Need for the Project Emergencies and accidents can occur without warning in schools, homes, roads and communities. In many emergency situations, the first few minutes are important before professional medical or emergency assistance becomes available. School students constitute a large and important section of society and can be effectively reached through the school education system. Providing students with basic awareness and practical exposure to BLS, CPR, First Aid, emergency response and disaster preparedness can strengthen their ability to respond appropriately and safely during emergencies. There is a need for a structured and standardized programme that moves beyond theoretical awareness and provides students with practical demonstrations, supervised learning and safety-oriented education. The proposed project will therefore establish a school-based approach to: • Improve awareness of basic life-saving skills. • Introduce students to appropriate emergency-response procedures. • Develop awareness of CPR and BLS. • Strengthen basic First Aid knowledge. • Promote disaster preparedness and evacuation awareness. • Improve accident-prevention and safety awareness. • Encourage a culture of preparedness and responsible citizenship. The programme is particularly relevant because students can also carry safety awareness from the school environment into their homes, families and communities, creating a wider social impact. 7. Objectives of the Project The major objectives of the project are: 1. To provide age-appropriate awareness and practical training in BLS, CPR and First Aid to school students. 2. To develop basic emergency-response skills and confidence among students. 3. To create awareness regarding the prevention and appropriate initial response to common accidents and emergencies. 4. To introduce students to basic disaster management and preparedness, including evacuation and emergency communication. 5. To promote awareness of school, road, fire, water and general personal safety. 6. To encourage students to respond responsibly while waiting for professional emergency assistance. 7. To promote a safety-conscious culture within schools. 8. To encourage students to share appropriate safety awareness with their families and communities. 9. To develop a scalable model that can be implemented across schools and districts of Karnataka. 10. To establish measurable monitoring and evaluation of the training programme. 8. Target Beneficiaries Primary Beneficiaries The primary beneficiaries of the proposed programme will be: • School students across Karnataka. • Students from Government, Government-aided and other schools, as permitted by the Department. • Students from appropriate age groups identified in consultation with the concerned educational authorities. Secondary Beneficiaries Subject to approval and inclusion in the programme: • Teachers. • School staff. • Student volunteers. • Youth volunteers. • Parents and community members through awareness activities. The district-wise, school-wise and student-wise beneficiary coverage will be finalized in consultation with the Department of School Education and Literacy and the concerned district educational authorities.
